After seven years in the USA, studying at the prestigious Berklee College of Music, soul, gospel and hip hop drummer Ben Charnley returns from New York City to Melbourne to host a night of music to get down to. Skyroku’s music reflects Ben’s influences as a working NYC musician, where the next call might be for a gospel revival show in the Bronx, an Afrobeat warehouse party in Brooklyn or a hip hop recording session in midtown. This ability to lay down the beat with a broad array of artists led to him being hired as drummer by the Desire of Nations gospel choir, hip hop band CrossCulture and Afrobeat group, the Gentleman Brawlers. He was also in demand in the jazz world performing alongside Randy Johnson (Lou Donaldson) and renowned NYC guitarist, Brad Shepik. A professional drummer since the age of 14, Ben forged a reputation in Melbourne for his exciting style of world music drumming with the Woohoo Revue, before moving to Boston in 2010. After heading to NYC in 2012, he completed his Master’s of Music at NYU, studying with jazz legends Kenny Werner and Ari Hoenig.
