The Megaphone Project is an interactive, site-responsive installation that explores sound and physical play. A field of striking red megaphones collect people’s voices that then return unexpectedly via a custom wireless network. Weaving through the field of megaphones, the audience creates a lively world of private and public broadcast that is all of their own invention, assisted by artist David Wells.

The Megaphone Project is created by Darebin artists Madeleine Flynn and Tim Humphrey. It has toured extensively nationally and internationally for the past decade, including The Kennedy Centre, USA; New Vision Arts Festival, Hong Kong; ANTI Festival, Finland; Sonica, Glasgow; and Sydney Opera House, with audiences of over 120,000 people. For its Darebin premiere, the artists will collect sounds unique to the city, including contributions from local musicians and students in the Woiwurrung language program at Thornbury Primary School, resulting in a sonic snapshot of the City of Darebin.

Anyone can contribute a short audio excerpt. Visit Megaphone Project soundbyte callout for submission details.
