Community world music orchestra, Orkeztra Glasso Bashalde, in collaboration with the Darebin Music Feast, is hosting the inaugural 2014 Composition Competition for composers who live, work or study in the City of Darebin.
Composers are invited to submit a two-page instrumental tune that fits stylistically with the Orkeztra Glasso Bashalde’s purpose and repertoire. The entries will be judged by a panel of established local musicians whose work reflects the musical genres of Orkeztra Glasso Bashalde.
“We’re a community world music orchestra playing tunes from Eastern Europe, the Balkans, Turkey and the Middle East,” said Musical Director, Gemma Horbury. “Our players range in age from 10 to 77 and come from a range of musical backgrounds and experience,” she said. “We’re looking for short, catchy tunes in the vein of our repertoire and that are accessible to players of ranging ability.”
Orkeztra Glasso Bashalde was established in 2008 by musician Pietro Fine with a vision to develop musicianship and strengthen community by promoting positive awareness of diverse musical cultures. The group performs regularly throughout the year to a loyal base of supporters and also supports the Australian music community by collaborating with local composers and musicians.
“We’re a not-for-profit group and after 6 years we’re in a position to do more to support the local music community,” said Horbury. “We recognise that there should be more opportunities at a grass-roots level for composers of instrumental music. We wanted to offer composers and musicians this chance to have their works judged by established performers and to take home the significant prize package. It takes real guts to be a musician and stick with it and I’m so proud we can not only offer someone the recognition they deserve but also a prize that could actually make a lasting difference to the winner’s career.”
The Composition Competition winner will receive $1,000 cash from Orkeztra Glasso Bashalde; 8-hours recording time with an engineer thanks to Incubator Studio; 8-hours mixing time with Pughouse Studios; a solid-body guitar (value $600) from High Street Music and a one-year Gold Membership to the Fingers of Fury Arabic and Turkish Drumming School.
The winner of the 2014 Orkeztra Glasso Bahalde Composition Competition will be announced at the Prize Presentation concert on Sunday 12 October as part of the Darebin Music Feast.
