Community world music orchestra, Orkeztra Glasso Bashalde, in collaboration with the Darebin Music Feast, is hosting the inaugural 2014 Composition Competition for composers who live, work or study in the City of Darebin.

Composers are invited to submit a two-page instrumental tune that fits stylistically with the Orkeztra Glasso Bashalde’s purpose and repertoire. The entries will be judged by a panel of established local musicians whose work reflects the musical genres of Orkeztra Glasso Bashalde.

“We’re a community world music orchestra playing tunes from Eastern Europe, the Balkans, Turkey and the Middle East,” said Musical Director, Gemma Horbury. “Our players range in age from 10 to 77 and come from a range of musical backgrounds and experience,” she said. “We’re looking for short, catchy tunes in the vein of our repertoire and that are accessible to players of ranging ability.”

Orkeztra Glasso Bashalde was established in 2008 by musician Pietro Fine with a vision to develop musicianship and strengthen community by promoting positive awareness of diverse musical cultures. The group performs regularly throughout the year to a loyal base of supporters and also supports the Australian music community by collaborating with local composers and musicians.

“We’re a not-for-profit group and after 6 years we’re in a position to do more to support the local music community,” said Horbury. “We recognise that there should be more opportunities at a grass-roots level for composers of instrumental music. We wanted to offer composers and musicians this chance to have their works judged by established performers and to take home the significant prize package.  It takes real guts to be a musician and stick with it and I’m so proud we can not only offer someone the recognition they deserve but also a prize that could actually make a lasting difference to the winner’s career.”

The Composition Competition winner will receive $1,000 cash from Orkeztra Glasso Bashalde; 8-hours recording time with an engineer thanks to Incubator Studio; 8-hours mixing time with Pughouse Studios; a solid-body guitar (value $600) from High Street Music and a one-year Gold Membership to the Fingers of Fury Arabic and Turkish Drumming School.

The winner of the 2014 Orkeztra Glasso Bahalde Composition Competition will be announced at the Prize Presentation concert on Sunday 12 October as part of the Darebin Music Feast.

Wildly entertaining, exceptionally talented and delightfully endearing, Skyscraper Stan is a troubadour rock’n’roll ace with the skinniest legs in the live music scene. Usually taking the stage as the fearless leader of Skyscraper Stan and the Commission Flats, Stan also regularly performs his own troubadour style of rock’n’roll, acoustic folk and alt-country solo with charming and energetic flair. Almost never compared to folk heroes like Woody Guthrie, Bob Dylan and Paul Kelly, Skyscraper Stan is nonetheless emerging as a sensational new talent in the Australian folk scene. line2Facebook: www.facebook.com/skyscraperstan Website: www.skyscraperstanandthecommissionflats.com/

Registration Process - Open to All, direct to Venues

Music events falling between Wednesday 8 and Sunday 19 October 2021 and within the City of Darebin can be registered for inclusion in the Local Music Venues program strand.

The majority of the Feast stages are housed in our local live music venues and arts spaces throughout Darebin (Northcote, Thornbury, Preston, Reservoir, Fairfield and Kingsbury). Northcote is a main destination for local and guest music lovers because it boasts the highest number of live music venues in one short strip in Melbourne. Venues and artists will benefit from the comprehensive marketing campaign that the Feast rolls out each year.

Find the venue that is right for your genre and the size of audience that you think you’ll attract. Approach bookers or the venue at least 3 months prior to the Feast to ensure your show gets into the venue calendar.

Click here for a list of our Local Music Venues within Darebin who usually participate.

Click here for examples of the types of shows registered in 2013.

Venue bookers, artists and producers are responsible for Registering a Show for inclusion in the program. Registrations WILL REQUIRE a good quality high resolution image (for use in landscape orientation no larger than 4cm high x 5cm wide) and a 100 word blurb. Late registrations will not be accepted, and registrations without HIGH RES image may not be accepted or responded to.

Please note that emails requesting that we book your act or find you a show will also not be responded to.

You can Register Your Show here until August 18, 2021

You can FOLLOW us on Facebook and Twitter to be alerted when the Registration Counter is open for service!
