Think Thursdays is the weekly live music initiative started by Think Thornbury. Grassroots, artist run and not for profit, it began as a bid to support all the various stripes of original music that is made in Australia, and provide a platform to feature these in our beautiful workshop space that overlooks High Street. These music nights aren’t so much focused on a particular genre, but are more concerned with quality original music. The curatorial direction is ‘music that makes you think’, whether that is abstract improvised music that aims to push expression, or simply poignant lyrics paired with a beautiful chord progression that aim to expand our understanding of the world. Think is also teamed up with All in Melbourne, an organisation with the goal of creating a more inclusive environment for musicians and audience members in the Melbourne jazz scene.

This Darebin Music Feast edition of Think Thursdays features the Josh Kelly Trio. Led by Melbourne saxophonist, Josh Kelly, the trio draws influence from two pivotal movements in jazz from the late ‘50s: modal jazz and free jazz. The improvisation and expression of these genres is combined with the groove and spirituality of traditional African and Korean music.
