Hugh McGinlay has recently celebrated twenty years on stage. In this time he has played in 10 countries and shared bills with the likes of Billy Bragg, Kate Rusby, Aldous Harding and the Proclaimers. With the Recessive Genes now in their tenth year together, the band are enjoying high popularity, boosted by Hugh’s recent tours of China and Japan. Hugh McGinlay and the Recessive Genes launch their new album Skeleton Leaves at Swampland as part of the Darebin Feast. This stripped back album has been hailed as their finest with comparisons to Richard Buckner, Neutral Milk Hotel and Gillian Welch. Touching on themes of failure and rebirth, this haunting record showcases the bands deft songcraft, tender arrangements and lyrical depth. In their only band show of 2019 – while drummer Ryan Vermeulen completes a project in East Timor – the remaining members will play the album in full while reaching into their own back catalogue and highlights of Hugh’s solo work.
