Sonic aGender: Music Experts Explore Artistry, Genre and Aesthetics
Friday 19 October – Sunday 21 October
Various times and venues
Sonic aGender is a program of events that considers relationships between gender, sound and narrative. We’ll be digging into ideas about how female, femme and non-binary indie musicians approach their artistry, what makes them, what breaks them, and how broader issues like age, class and ethnicity affect creative practice.
Whether you’re a musician, a collector, a producer or a punter, immerse yourself in the many and varied layers of Melbourne’s independent music making.
Curated by Janelle Johnstone.
Janelle Johnstone has been a music industry and community development professional for over two decades. She is also a musician and a local Darebin resident, and is currently completing her PhD at La Trobe University in cultural anthropology conducting an analysis of gendered participation in Melbourne’s independent live music industry.
