The Advancing Guitarist by Mick Goodrick turned the guitar fraternity on its head. Thirty years on, it continues to hold currency and inspire legions of players around the globe. This day-long guitar lab offers a rare opportunity to experience the landmark book through the lens of Stephen Magnusson. During the last thirty years, Magnusson has diligently applied himself to the material and in the process has developed into one of this country’s most distinctive voices on the instrument. This workshop will not present a methodology – given that would be at odds with the book’s ethos – instead it will provide inspiring insight into how one exceptional player has harnessed and exploited this material for his own musical ends. Participants are encouraged to bring guitars and a copy of the book. Topics covered will include: electric ice-skating, superimposition intervals, quartal harmony, major 7B5 modes and time-rhythm.

‘The hallmarks of Magnusson’s art are starlit enchantment one moment, scorching intensity the next.’
— Sydney Morning Herald

‘Lucas Michailidis is quite simply a guitar-playing phenomenon…’
— Akustik Gitarre, Germany

Proudly supported by Melbourne Polytechnic.
